Book Creating Your Best Life: The Ultimate Life List Guide Review :

This is a new edition of a book that was originally published about a decade ago. Apparently "a new introduction, a new cover, and a fresh new interior design" is worth doubling the price of the paperback version. There is no excuse for the fact that the text of this book wasn't reviewed prior to the new edition coming out. There are major problems.I bought this book because it is science-based. However, none of the citations are actually in-line. You have to go to the end of the book, find the page you were on, and see if there are any citations by matching up short excerpts from the text. Why?The first four links I tried to visit were all to websites that had been defunct for many years, including ones that are mentioned repeatedly in the text as great resources. None of the goal setting websites that are linked exist anymore. Couldn't this have been updated? Why republish a book like this? The above aside, my main criticism comes from the uncomfortable misogynistic undertones of the book. Of the in-line quotes, nearly 90% of them are from men. Angela Duckworth's work on the topic of grit is couched in the fact that she "uprooted her family" in order to focus on her research. There is a weird story about a man who can't resist the feminine wiles of his female co-workers, and ends up sleeping with one them and derailing his career. This comes to a crescendo in a story entitled "not tonight, honey" (I'm sure you can only imaging where this is going...). It begins, "Sandra drives home from her job, anticipating the night of warm showers and enjoyable sex that she has planned with her husband via e-mail during the day." However, Sandra returns home to a messy house, kid's homework everywhere, and no signs of dinner being prepared... "Needless to say, an anticipated evening of mutual pleasure and connection fizzles again, just like countless other nights..." Sandra goes on to wonder "what is wrong with me" and the author literally asks, "why couldn't she just walk away from these messes and hold on to her good mood?" and why can't Sandra meet the "sexual needs of her husband"? "As Sandra mindlessly attends to these tasks while angrily stewing over them all the while, not only will she do all of them poorly in all likelihood, but she will continue to be in the mood that her husband interprets as 'inhibited'. What could Sandra have done differently?"ARE YOU KIDDING ME???And as if this weren't enough, there is a wildly offensive description of millennials that is so off the charts I read it thinking it must be some kind of joke. Here is only one example of a long section: "They are absorbed in in themselves and are accustomed to posting continuous updates of their relationship status and appearance on MySpace and Facebook. They resent getting cell phone messages because text messages require less effort than actually punching a few extra buttons and listening to someone's voice". This is completely outrageous and ignorant.I can't deny that there is useful information in this book. But I don't think I should have to deal with what I've described above when trying to read about a book about setting goals to "create a better life".
I read a lot on selfhelp and positive psychology, so a lot of this rehashed things I already knew. For example: exercise, practice gratitude, meditate, etc. but I don’t mind being reminded, and it was an enjoyable read. I also learned some new things, especially when it comes to goal setting and sticking to it.
